Summer Loving: First Week of July

I’m a bit behind in blogging because my computer has been acting up lately but I think I’ve solved the problem. Since I didn’t post anything lats week, I’m going to separate my weekend recaps into two post. This post will consist of pictures from the first week of July.

Canada Day

My Canada day didn’t go as I had planned. I intended to go to Canada Place with my cousin before she went to work but we left the house too late and couldn’t make it in time. Instead we went to Chinatown:

We went to The Ramen Butcher for lunch. I had the Tsukemen; a cold ramen dish dipped in warm soup. It was great for the hot weather that day, but I found the broth too salty for my preference.

Afterwards, we walked over to Matchstick Coffee and I had an iced London Fog. Matchstick coffee is one of my favourite places to get a London Fog, following Steam tea house.

Afterwards, I went over to my other cousins house to celebrate his birthday and to eat some more. Following that, my friends and I had planned to go to Wreck Beach, but we never made it to the beach because one of my friends got too drunk and passed out.

Friday- July 3rd

On Friday afternoon, my cousin and I decided to bring her dog Miso to the park and have a picnic as well. We bought some snacks and sandwiches from Renzullo Food Market, a cute family-run deli in my neighborhood.

On Changing my Lifestlye

Lately I’ve been experiencing some health scares. It was a wake-up call for me because as a 21 year old, I still have a long life ahead of me. A combination of unhealthy eating habits, stress, lack of sleep and lack of motivation to exercise created an unhealthy lifestyle. A recent unsettling event also triggered me to binge eat, which made matters worse. Now I’m on a mission to change my lifestyle, which includes eating healthier and exercising regularly. I’ve hired a personal trainer to help motivate me to exercise, in addition to teaching me how to exercise effectively and properly. I’m not going to lie, as a person who loves food, making healthier eating choices is hard! Cooking at home allows me to control what I eat and also saves me money.

But when I do go out to eat, I try to order healthier items. Recently, I’ve been enjoying Burgoo’s vegiterranean sandwich accompanied by their kale and quinoa salad. Although I love to eat meat, I love the combination of the vegetables in this sandwich.

Shizenya: Healthy Japanese Lunch

After consuming a hefty amount of unhealthy foods during midterms, I decided to get something healthier for lunch last week after class. I was in the mood for Japanese, so I settled upon Shizenya. I’ve been to their downtown location before, but this time I visited the Fairview location. I really like their offerings; there aren’t many Japanese restaurants that offer a full menu of healthier Japanese options. Check our their menu here. What intrigued me the most is their whole wheat tempura because I’ve never seen any other place offer that.

I decided to get takeout as I was not in the mood to dine alone…

I ordered off their lunch special combo menu and got the beef teriyaki combojuicy and tender sukiyaki beef with teriyaki sauce, organic brown rice, spinach gomaae and organic salad ($8.95).

Even though I got takeout and waited at least 20 minutes to eat it, the beef was surprisingly still very tender. The sauce wasn’t overly sweet or salty and went well with the perfectly cooked brown rice. I thought this was a good portion for lunch and for just under $10, the price isn’t too bad either, considering healthier meal options  (look at Whole Foods) generally cost more.

Overall, Shinzenya is a good place to grab some healthier Japanese food. Some of the menu offerings are pricier than the average Japanese restaurant, but given that many of their dishes use organic ingredients and brown rice, it’s expected.

My Week

This week has been spent lounging around at home, riding my newly fixed bike and catching up with S.A.W. Here are some things from my week:

This song has been stuck in my head for the past week:

{Bought this ring holder and necklace stand to reorganize my accessories}

Freedom!

I finished my last exam, which means freedom! I’ve been feeling pretty good lately due to several factors:

  • I did well on both my anthropology and criminology papers
  • I have no more exams to do
  • I got an email from Eat! Vancouver informing me of my volunteer position
  • I got to hang out with S.A.W and Bill Gate’s daughter after having no social life for the past 2 months
  • I got money from a piece of clothing I consigned

This was suppose to be up yesterday (Friday), but I was too tired when I came home. Started Friday off with an 8:30am exam and came home around 9pm. I took a lot of pictures so I’m going to make a separate post on what I did on Friday tomorrow.

Here are some phone pictures of my week:

{What I made for dinner on Monday: cod fillet with Es S’ sauce, cheese tortellini & green salad}

{Small beef noodle soup (pho) & salad roll at Oakridge food court}

{Macaron’s from Murchies. They spelled macaron wrong haha}

What I Ate for Lunch Today

Just a quick post about what I ate for lunch today:

{Chicken Parmesan with salad}

This was very simple to make; just add tomoatoe sauce, parmesan and mozzarella cheese on top of a breaded chicken breast and bake until cheese is melted.

My last day of classes is tomorrow but I have a lot of notes to prepare for finals. I’ve been in a bad mood because I’m being taken advantage of by 2 friends. You probably don’t care LOL, so I’ll spare you the details.

My lunch for today

Hello! Just wanted to make a quick post about my lunch for today : mixed green salad with balsamic vinaigrette and curry chicken salad  on top and it is from Whole Foods. The chicken doesn’t look very appetizing in this picture, but it is delicious!Since school has started, I’ve been trying to eat healthier and have been eating at home most of the week. Since I get off class at 10:20 on Mondays, I am able to go home and make lunch. I’ll probably being doing more of these post since it is fast and easy to post.
